3.1   Learning and Development

Aim

We aim to work closely with parents promoting the learning and development of all children, ensuring they foster an enjoyment for learning and are ready for school. We observe, plan, and maintain an online ‘Learning Journey’ for each child, providing the best available evidence of the children’s learning, skills, and development. At the end of each term, we will provide parents with a report and plan to meet with them to discuss their child’s progress. This incorporates the progress check at age two.

Areas of Learning

There are seven areas of learning and development that we incorporate into all aspects of learning and care. All areas of learning are important and interconnected, however three of the areas are particularly crucial for fostering an enjoyment of learning. They are:

o   Communication and language

o   Physical development

o   Personal, social, and emotional development

Precious Play Days also support children in the four specific areas:

o   Literacy

o   Mathematics

o   Understanding the world

o   Expressive arts and design

We endeavour to plan challenging, exciting, and enjoyable activities incorporating all areas of learning, while considering the individual needs, interests, and developmental stage of each child. We will especially concentrate on the three prime areas of learning for our younger children and those who speak English as an additional language. These areas contain key skills that children need to develop to ensure they are ready for school. As the children grow in confidence, we will focus all areas of learning.

Characteristics of Effective Teaching and Learning

We passionately believe that children use the characteristics of effective teaching and learning when they are exploring their environment. These characteristics are:

o   Playing and Exploring

o   Active Learning

o   Creating and thinking critically
